AC BLOWING WARM AIR
IN ARIZONA?
7 CAUSES — AND HOW TO FIX THEM

Your AC is running but your home isn't cooling. In Arizona's summer heat, this is a genuine emergency. Here's exactly what's wrong and what to do about it — from Bradford Heating & Cooling in Surprise, AZ.

CHECK THESE TWO THINGS FIRST — BEFORE CALLING ANYONE

1. Thermostat: Is it set to COOL (not FAN or HEAT)? Is the setpoint at least 5°F below current room temp?  |  2. Air filter: Is it visibly dirty or clogged? Replace it and wait 30 minutes. If neither fixes it, read on.

THE 7 MOST COMMON CAUSES

Listed in order of frequency in Arizona's West Valley. Bradford diagnoses the exact cause before quoting any repair.

01

Failed Capacitor

Most Common

The capacitor is a small cylindrical component that gives your compressor and fan motors the jolt of electricity needed to start. When it fails, the compressor can't start — so the fan runs but no cooling happens. You may hear a humming or clicking sound from the outdoor unit.

BRADFORD'S FIX

Bradford stocks USA-made Turbo capacitors on every truck. Typical repair time: 30–45 minutes. Flat-rate price: $355–$416.

02

Failed Contactor

Very Common

The contactor is a relay switch that sends power to your compressor when the thermostat calls for cooling. A worn or burned contactor means the compressor never receives power — the indoor fan runs, air moves, but no cooling occurs.

BRADFORD'S FIX

Same-day repair in most cases. Flat-rate price: $196–$339.

03

Low Refrigerant (Freon Leak)

Common

Refrigerant is the substance that actually absorbs heat from your home's air. If your system has a leak, refrigerant levels drop and your AC loses the ability to cool. Signs include: ice on the refrigerant lines, hissing sounds near the outdoor unit, and gradually worsening cooling over days or weeks.

BRADFORD'S FIX

Bradford finds and repairs the leak first, then recharges. R-410A: $95–$150/lb. R-22: $150/lb. A top-off without fixing the leak is money wasted.

04

Frozen Evaporator Coil

Common

The evaporator coil (inside your air handler) can freeze solid when airflow is restricted or refrigerant is low. A frozen coil blocks all heat transfer — your AC runs but can't cool. You may notice ice on the refrigerant lines coming out of your indoor unit, or reduced airflow from vents.

✓ DIY FIX

Turn off the AC and run the fan only for 2–4 hours to thaw the coil. Do not run cooling until it's fully thawed — you can damage the compressor. Then check and replace your air filter.

BRADFORD'S FIX

After thawing, Bradford diagnoses the root cause: dirty filter, low refrigerant, or blocked drain. Price depends on root cause.

05

Dirty or Clogged Air Filter

Common — DIY Fix

A severely clogged filter restricts airflow so much that the system can't move enough air across the evaporator coil to cool your home. In Arizona's dusty environment, filters clog faster than in most states — especially near construction zones or unpaved roads.

✓ DIY FIX

Check and replace your 1" filter every 30–60 days in Arizona summers. Thicker 4–5" media filters last 6–12 months. A clean filter costs $5–$20 and takes 2 minutes to replace.

BRADFORD'S FIX

If a new filter doesn't resolve the issue within 30 minutes, call Bradford — there's likely a secondary cause.

06

Thermostat Set to 'Fan Only'

Easy Fix — Check First

Before calling anyone, verify your thermostat is set to COOL (not FAN or HEAT) and the temperature setpoint is at least 3–5 degrees below the current room temperature. This sounds obvious, but it's the first thing Bradford checks on every call.

✓ DIY FIX

Set thermostat to COOL, set temperature 5°F below current room temp, wait 5 minutes. If the outdoor unit doesn't start, you have a real problem.

BRADFORD'S FIX

If the thermostat settings are correct and the system still won't cool, call Bradford at (623) 624-6246.

07

Failed Compressor

Less Common — Expensive

The compressor is the heart of your AC system. When it fails, the system runs but produces zero cooling. Compressor failure is more common on systems over 10 years old, especially those that have run with low refrigerant for extended periods. Signs: outdoor unit runs but makes loud grinding or clanking sounds.

BRADFORD'S FIX

Compressor replacement costs $1,200–$2,800 depending on system size. On systems over 10 years old, Bradford will give you an honest repair vs. replace recommendation — sometimes a new system is the better investment.
