QUICK ANSWER
R-22 (Freon) refrigerant costs $150/lb in Arizona - 3-4x the cost of R-410A. R-22 was banned from new production in 2020 and only recycled supplies remain. Most R-22 systems are 15-20+ years old. Bradford's recommendation: if your R-22 system needs a refrigerant recharge, it's almost always more cost-effective to replace the system than to recharge it. A 3-lb recharge costs $450+ - and the leak will likely return.
R-22 Freon costs $150/lb in Arizona and is no longer manufactured. Bradford explains why recharging an R-22 system is usually a waste of money and when to replace.
R-22 (also called Freon) was the standard refrigerant for residential AC systems from the 1960s through 2010. The EPA banned new production of R-22 in 2020 due to its ozone-depleting properties. Only recycled and reclaimed R-22 is available, which is why prices have skyrocketed from $10/lb in 2010 to $150/lb today.
Bradford's honest answer: almost never. R-22 systems are 15-20+ years old - near or past end of life. A 3-lb recharge costs $450+ - and the leak will likely return. Recharging doesn't fix the leak - you'll be back in 6-18 months. A new Trane system starts at $9,096 installed with 0% financing. The new system will pay for itself in energy savings within 5-7 years.
R-22 and R-410A are not compatible. You cannot simply convert an R-22 system to R-410A - the refrigerant lines, compressor, and coils are all designed for different pressures. The only way to switch is to replace the entire system. Bradford installs R-454B (the new EPA-mandated refrigerant) on all new systems.
If your R-22 system needs refrigerant: Bradford will diagnose the leak and give you an honest assessment. If the system is under 12 years old and in otherwise good condition, a recharge may make sense. If the system is 12+ years old, Bradford will show you the cost of recharging vs. the cost of a new system with 0% financing. Most customers choose replacement - the math almost always favors it.
