How Often Should You Get an AC Tune-Up in Arizona?

Arizona's extreme heat puts more stress on air conditioners than almost anywhere in the country. Here's how often Surprise-area homeowners should schedule HVAC maintenance — and what happens if you skip it.

By Ken Bradford Baker·Owner & Lead Technician, Bradford Heating & Cooling

The Short Answer: Once a Year, Before Summer

For most Arizona homeowners, one AC tune-up per year — scheduled in February, March, or early April before temperatures climb above 90°F — is the right baseline. If you have a heat pump that runs year-round for both heating and cooling, twice a year (spring and fall) is better.

That said, the right answer depends on your system's age, how hard it runs, and the conditions in your home. Here's how to think through it.

Why Arizona Is Different

In most of the country, an AC system runs 3–4 months per year. In Surprise, Peoria, and the West Valley, your system runs 8–9 months per year — and during peak summer, it runs nearly continuously for weeks at a time. That's roughly 2–3× the annual runtime of a system in a northern climate.

More runtime means more wear on capacitors, contactors, and motor bearings. It also means more dust accumulation on coils and filters — and in the West Valley, haboob season (June–September) accelerates that dramatically.

A system that could go two years between tune-ups in Minnesota needs annual service in Arizona. A system that's 10+ years old in Arizona may benefit from a tune-up every 6 months.

What a Bradford $59 Tune-Up Includes

Bradford's 20-point inspection covers the full system, not just a filter swap:

  • Inspect and clean evaporator and condenser coils
  • Check refrigerant charge (low refrigerant is the #1 cause of poor cooling)
  • Test capacitors and contactors (the most common failure points)
  • Inspect and lubricate blower motor and fan bearings
  • Check thermostat calibration and operation
  • Inspect electrical connections and wiring
  • Clear condensate drain line (clogged drains cause water damage)
  • Replace 1 standard filter (included)
  • Measure temperature differential across the coil
  • Test system startup and shutdown sequence

Signs You Should Schedule Sooner

Don't wait for the annual tune-up if you notice any of these:

  • Your system is running longer than usual to reach the set temperature
  • Unusual sounds — clicking, grinding, or squealing at startup
  • Higher-than-normal electric bills without a change in usage
  • Ice forming on the refrigerant lines or evaporator coil
  • Warm air from vents when the system is in cooling mode

What Happens If You Skip It

Skipping annual maintenance doesn't mean your system will immediately fail — but it does mean small problems compound. A dirty condenser coil forces the compressor to work harder, increasing electricity consumption and shortening compressor life. A failing capacitor that costs $195–$260 to replace will eventually cause a compressor failure that costs $1,800–$2,400.

Most HVAC manufacturers also require documented annual maintenance to keep the warranty valid. If you have a Trane or RunTru system under warranty, skipping service can void your coverage.

Bradford's Recommendation

Schedule your tune-up in February or March. By April, Bradford's schedule fills up quickly as homeowners rush to get their systems ready for summer. Booking early means you get the appointment time you want and your system is ready before the first 100°F day.
