Why Your HVAC Tech Should Install Your CO Detectors

Carbon monoxide comes from the same equipment Bradford already inspects. When we service your HVAC system, we know exactly where CO risks live in your home — and exactly where detectors need to go.

Gas Furnaces

A cracked heat exchanger in your furnace can leak CO directly into your home's air supply. Bradford inspects heat exchangers on every furnace tune-up.

Heat Pumps & AC Units

While heat pumps don't burn fuel, a malfunctioning gas backup strip or attached gas appliance can produce CO. CO detectors near HVAC equipment are critical.

Attached Garages

Vehicles left running in an attached garage are the #1 cause of accidental CO poisoning in the U.S. A CO detector near the garage entry is required by Arizona code.

Water Heaters

Gas water heaters produce CO during normal operation. A malfunctioning or improperly vented water heater can push dangerous levels into living spaces.

Arizona Code Requirements

Arizona follows the International Residential Code (IRC) and NFPA 72 for smoke and CO detector placement. Here's what's required in every Surprise, Peoria, and West Valley home:

  • Smoke alarm on every level of the home
  • Smoke alarm inside every bedroom
  • Smoke alarm outside each sleeping area (hallway)
  • CO detector on every level with a fuel-burning appliance
  • CO detector near attached garages
  • CO detector within 10 feet of each bedroom door

⚠️ Most Arizona homes built before 2010 are not up to current code.

Bradford checks detector placement and manufacture dates during every HVAC service call — at no extra charge.

When to Replace Your Detectors

Smoke AlarmsEvery 10 years

Check the manufacture date on the back — not the install date.

CO DetectorsEvery 5–7 years

CO sensors degrade over time. An expired unit may not alarm even with CO present.

Combination UnitsEvery 7–10 years

Replace when the CO sensor expires, even if the smoke sensor still works.

Any unit that chirpsImmediately

Chirping = low battery or end-of-life. Don't ignore it — replace the unit.

Smoke & CO Alarm FAQ

Carbon monoxide is produced by gas furnaces, heat pumps, water heaters, and any fuel-burning appliance — the same equipment Bradford already services. When we tune up or repair your HVAC system, we can also inspect and install CO detectors in the same visit. It makes sense for your HVAC technician to handle both.
Arizona state code and the NFPA 72 standard require a smoke alarm on every level of the home, inside each bedroom, and outside each sleeping area. CO detectors are required on every level that has a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage. Most Surprise-area homes need 4–8 units total depending on layout.
Smoke alarms detect visible or invisible combustion particles from fires. Carbon monoxide detectors detect CO gas, which is colorless and odorless — produced by incomplete combustion in furnaces, water heaters, gas stoves, and vehicles. Combination units detect both and are recommended for every home with gas appliances.
Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. CO detectors typically last 5–7 years — check the manufacture date on the back of the unit. Many homeowners don't realize their detectors have expired. Bradford checks the manufacture date during every HVAC service call.
A continuous alarm means CO is detected — leave the home immediately, leave the door open, and call 911. Do NOT re-enter until emergency services clear the building. A chirping or beeping pattern (4 beeps, pause, 4 beeps) typically means the battery is low or the unit has reached end-of-life. Call Bradford at (623) 624-6246 and we can help diagnose the issue.
Bradford installs battery-operated combination smoke/CO detectors. For hardwired installations, we work with licensed electricians and can provide a referral through our Preferred Partners program. Most modern homes do well with 10-year sealed-battery combination units — no wiring required.
Bradford installs First Alert and Kidde combination smoke/CO detectors — the two most trusted brands recommended by the NFPA and the U.S. Fire Administration. We stock 10-year sealed-battery models so you won't need to change batteries for the life of the unit.
