AC Making a Clicking Noise?
Stop Running It Now.

A clicking noise from your AC is almost never minor. In Arizona's heat, running a system with a grinding compressor or motor can turn a $500 repair into a $2,500+ replacement. Here's what's causing it and what to do.

If your AC is making a grinding noise: turn it off at the thermostat immediately. Do not run it until a technician has diagnosed the cause. Continuing to operate a grinding AC system risks total compressor failure — the most expensive repair in HVAC.

5 Causes of AC Clicking Noise — By Danger Level

Bradford technicians diagnose grinding noises daily across Surprise, Peoria, Glendale, and the West Valley. Here's what we find most often.

CRITICAL

1. Failing Compressor

A clicking or clunking sound from the outdoor unit almost always points to the compressor. The compressor is the most expensive component in your AC system — if it seizes, you're looking at a full replacement. Turn the system off immediately and call Bradford.

Turn off AC now. Do not run it. Call (623) 624-6246.

URGENT

2. Worn Blower Motor Bearings

The indoor blower motor has bearings that wear over time — especially in Surprise AZ's dusty environment. When bearings fail, they produce a clicking or clunking sound from the air handler. Left unaddressed, the motor will seize and stop airflow entirely.

Schedule same-day service. Motor replacement is far cheaper than a seized motor damaging the system.

MODERATE

3. Debris in the Outdoor Fan

Rocks, twigs, or debris can get lodged in the outdoor condenser fan blades, causing a clicking or rattling sound. In Arizona's monsoon season, this is common. The fan blade itself may also be bent or cracked.

Turn off the unit. Do not reach into the unit yourself. Call Bradford to inspect and clear safely.

MODERATE

4. Loose or Damaged Fan Blade

A fan blade that has come loose from its hub, or has cracked due to age or impact, will create a clicking or tapping noise as it spins. In Arizona's heat, plastic fan blades can warp and crack faster than in cooler climates.

Schedule service within 24 hours. A broken blade can damage the condenser coil if it flies loose.

URGENT

5. Condenser Fan Motor Failure

The outdoor condenser fan motor can develop bearing wear just like the indoor blower. When it grinds, the motor is close to failure. Without the condenser fan, your system will overheat and the compressor will trip on high-pressure lockout.

Schedule same-day or next-day service. Running the system without a working condenser fan will damage the compressor.
